How To Use Shift Lock Coupler
Start at 15 PSI. Test drive and adjust in 5 PSI increments until optimal. High winds may require added PSI. NEVER exceed 100 PSI in air bag, this will damage air bag. Grease hitch ball and pivot bolt regularly using the grease zerk on base of stem. Recommended to grease every 6-12 months based on usage to reduce wear. To connect: Move handle to unlocked position (Figure 15), lower trailer ontoo ball (Figure 16), move handle to locked position, insert quick clip pin. Check Lock: u-bolt should stick out 1″ from coupler rear when locked (Figure 17). If you do NOT see this, repeat stems 1 and 2 until u-bolt is visible from rear of coupler.
Manual lock option available for additional security or if Shift Lock handle is damaged (Figure 18).

    FAQ

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions on the Shocker Gooseneck Air Hitch

How do I know the Gooseneck surge with fit my gooseneck trailer? There are two things you need to know. What kind of stem your gooseneck trailer has and what kind of ball your pickup has. You can also find the hitch you need by using our Gooseneck Trailer MFG guide.

What is the Gooseneck surge tow rating?  30,000 lbs towing capacity for 30K Gooseneck air with shift lock coupler for 2-5/16″ ball & 7,000 lbs tongue weight. 40,000 lbs towing capacity with 40K goose air with shift lock coupler for 3″ ball. The 9″ offset coupler for 2-5/16″ ball has 6,000 lbs tongue weight.

How much air pressure do I put in the gooseneck surge air hitch?  See air pressure video. Start at 15 PSI if unloaded or a lighter gooseneck trailer. Start at 25 lbs if a heavy duty or loaded trailer. Test drive and adjust in 5 PSI increments until optimal. High winds may require added PSI. NEVER exceed 100 PSI in air bag, this will damage air spring bag. Grease hitch ball regularly and pivot bolt regularly using the grease zerk on base of stem. Recommended to grease hitch stem pivot bolt every 6-12 months based on usage to reduce wear.

How long will the airbag last? Our air spring bags are an industrial bag and will last for years and years. They are similar to truck air spring bags but have been beefed up internally for our towing applications. We do offer replacement airbags. How long will it hold air? This is a sealed air system that will hold air for weeks or months. If you haul the same trailer with the same load weight, it should be good for quite some time.

Is there a way to lock the Gooseneck coupler? Yes, we do carry both Shift Lock & Demco gooseneck coupler locks. specially made for our Gooseneck surge hitch with shift lock or demco coupler as well as a Gooseneck stem set bolt locks.

Can you really install the Gooseneck Surge in a couple of minutes? Yes check out the Gooseneck Air Hitch Install Video.

What do your mean when you say straight or angled / slotted safety through pin holes for round gooseneck inner tube stems?  We are wondering if your gooseneck stem has holes that are straight across OR if it is slightly angled 10-30 degrees, where the stem hitch pin is off set or at an angle. Straight pin hole is left to right. Angled pin holes can be 10-20 degrees, generally a 4″ round tube inner stem or 20-30 degrees is a 100mm (3-15/16″) round inner stem. Our new patent pending round multi-fit stem fits all of them, 100mm or 4″ round inner stem with straight pin or angled through holes up to 30 degrees.  See our gooseneck stem selection guide.

Will it work with my flat bed pickup with recessed in a flatbed pocket? Yes, see the fitment guide for recessed ball.

If I Order a gooseneck surge air hitch & coupler, what all comes in the box? Includes a complete replacement inner gooseneck stem size selected, surge air hitch system & gooseneck coupler selected along with clear-cut installation instructions.

How strong is the center pivot bolt?  The main pivot bolt with grease zerk, or center pivot bolt, used on the gooseneck hitch, is a custom made 1.25 inch diameter 1045 medium carbon steel bolt. Strategically heat treated to prevent wear and includes a machined grease passage for easy lubrication and maintenance. It should be noted that the yield strength of the 1.25″ pivot bolt exceeds the rating of the gooseneck hitch. How often do I grease it? The grease does not just lube the pivot; it also keeps water and dirt out. You cannot over grease it. Grease twice a year or more if you tow frequently.

How does the air ride gooseneck surge system work? The air shocker is like a teeter totter. One end is an air bag, a pivot in the middle, and a ball at the other end. This gives a “pillow” effect at the ball end.

How much does an Shocker gooseneck surge air hitch & coupler weigh? The Gooseneck Surge Air Hitch & Coupler weighs 95 to 100 lbs depending on the model.

Questions and answers of the customers

Do you make one with a longer stem, really don’t want all that torque going to just remaining six inches of stem. I need 11-12 inches of clearance bed rail to trailer for getting into our property the way the entrance slopes . For a 2027 Lakota Horse trailer. Pulling with a 2020 F450 . Why do the Lakota trailer surge so bad? My 2004 Exiss was way better.

Q Do you make one with a longer stem, really don’t want all that torque going to just remaining six...... Read more
A Great questions - let me address each one: **On the stem length concern:** The Shocker Air Ride for Lakota uses our Round Multi-Fit Stem, which is a thick-wall heavy-duty replacement designed to match the factory stem dimensions. I don't have a longer-than-standard stem option in the catalog. Your concern about engagement is valid, and this is something our technical team should address directly - they can tell you the exact stem engagement length and whether any custom options exist. **On bed rail clearance (11 - 12 inches):** The Shocker hitch has 3 height adjustment holes on the coupler, and the coupler extends 3″ forward from your factory location (or 9″ with the offset version). That said, bed-rail-to-trailer clearance is largely determined by your gooseneck ball height in the bed and how the trailer sits - the hitch itself can only adjust so much. With a 2020 F450 being a taller truck, this is definitely something to dial in with the team. **On why your Lakota surges compared to your Exiss:** This is exactly what the Shocker Gooseneck Surge Air Hitch was built to solve. The surging (chucking) you feel is the result of a hard connection transferring every bump and road imperfection directly between truck and trailer. The Shocker uses a rocker-arm pivot design with an adjustable air spring bag and dual bump cushions that absorbs those front-to-back jerks - it's the only air ride hitch that exclusively works in that forward-and-back motion, which is where you feel surging the most. Horse owners consistently report a night-and-day difference. I'm transferring you to our technical team now so they can dig into the stem length and bed clearance specifics for your setup. They'll follow up via email as soon as possible. Thanks for reaching out!

First of all, the help from the sales department has been fantastic! Thank you so much for the help. My wife hasn’t taken the trailer on the highway yet, but the day we installed it we took it for a three mile ride. My wife said that she could tell the difference immediately. Much smoother ride. The best birthday gift she’s received in many years. Thanks again to the family at Shocker Hitches. God bless

Shocker hitches do exactly as advertised. It makes a huge difference in the ride of my truck, especially when crossing bridges on the interstate. You don’t feel the bad jolt as you start across and leave the bridge. I only use 27lbs of air pressure towing a 15000lb horse trailer with living quarters. Highly recommended and worth every penny

This hitch makes a huge difference when stopping , starting, slowing down, and speeding up. I love that it makes for a quieter ride for my horse!

Most important is the cab clearance it gives me.which would have saved me nearly $4,000 of damaged caused the week prior to installation of the hitch, from not being able to have proper turning radius clearance.

Installation was a breeze. I’m sixty years old and adjusted the height by my self. I have a 42 foot horse trailer with living quarters and am going to start my starting air pressure at 20 psi. Haven’t pulled yet, but will next week. If I’m able to update I will… all greased and ready to go.

Pulling a 40 ‘gooseneck living quarters horse trailer with 3 horses is a job for my 1 ton. Then you add in the jerk and bounce going down these interstate roads….
I should have bought this product a few years ago!!! Great investment for my truck, trailer and me…don’t leave home without it..

583 miles and so far it is a great addition. Ride is so much better on rough roads, it save our truck and trailer from damage due to bad interstate roads. Thank you.
