    4. Setting Air Pressure

Load the Trailer: Hook up your trailer and load it as you normally would for travel.

To Set Air: Hook up trailer using a properly selected ball adaptor and height adjustment to level trailer when loaded. Next, inflate the air spring. As air pressure increases, the unit will rotate, lifting the hitch point. Install enough air until the top of the hitch frame touches the top (tailgate side) bump cushion, or for heavy loads, until it compresses the tailgate side bump cushion by approximately 1/8″.

    Spacer Block Guide

How do I know if I need a spacer block on my air receiver hitch? How do I know if I need a spacer block on my air receiver hitch? When your air receiver and trailer are hooked up, and the air receiver has the proper air pressure, the metal paddle above the air spring bag should be level with the air spring bag. If the paddle has more than a 10-degree angle when the air receiver hitch is aired up, a spacer block can be installed on top of the paddle to level the paddle and air spring bag. A spacer is needed when the angle between the bottom of the vehicle receiver and the top paddle above the air spring bag on the hitch is excessive. (A spacer block is used with 20K HD Air Receiver Hitches with a 2″ receiver (already installed) and some HD air receiver hitches with a 2-1/2″ receiver (Spacer comes in box). It is generally not ever needed with a 14K air receiver hitch, as the air spring bag is 1″ taller than the HD air spring bag.)

Safety Notice: NEVER exceed 100PSI, as this can damage the air spring or bushings.

Spacer block pressed up against receiver tube (Properly Installed)

When is a spacer block needed?

    Additional Set Up Notes:

    • When towing heavy trailers or trailers with high wind resistance, it may be necessary to increase air pressure in the Shocker.
    • It is highly recommended that the hitch ball be greased to reduce wear and improve shocker action.
    • Ensure you have connected your safety chains and electrical cord before towing.
    • DO NOT TIGHTEN THE TOP BOLT, IT IS A LIMITER STOP ONLY.

Maximum Air Pressure: Do not exceed 100 psi in the air spring, as it may damage the air spring.

Will the Shocker Air Bumper Hitch work with Equalizer or Weight-Distribution?  If you have an equalizer or weight distribution hitch, then it will not. However, check out our Shocker Air Equalizer for weight distribution hitches. If you are just using friction sway bars that hook to a mini ball (such as the shocker sway control arm bar kit), then yes, if you also have one of our sway bar tab mounts, such as the combo sway control ball mount attachment

    Routine Maintenance Guide:

    1. Routine Lubrication
Pivot Bolt: Regularly grease the Shocker Hitch unit using the built-in grease zerk located on the main pivot bolt.
Over-Greasing: You cannot over-grease the unit; frequent lubrication ensures the air-ride pivot remains fluid and responsive.
Hitch Ball: It is highly recommended to grease the trailer coupler ball to reduce friction and prevent premature wear.
    2. Critical Adjustments
Top Jamnut Bolt: DO NOT tighten the top jamnut bolt.
Factory Specs: This bolt is set to factory specifications out of the box; overtightening will cause a stiff towing experience and limit the airbag’s effectiveness.
Attachment Swapping: When changing between different ball mounts (Combo, Pintle, Clevis, etc.), ensure the pins and cotter pin clips are fully seated and locked.
    3. Air System Integrity
Max Pressure: Never Exceed 100PSI in the air spring.
Component Protection: Excessive pressure can lead to permanent damage to the air spring or the internal bump cushions.
Pre-Tow Inspection: Always check your air pressure after loading the trailer to ensure the frame is lightly compressing the bump cushion.

Our Shocker Air Receiver Hitch is compatible with sway arms. To use it with sway control, you’ll need to select a ball mount with sway tabs, available in raised mount, combo ball, and drop mount options. You can find these options in the drop-down section. The link to the sway arm kit is provided below.

Please note that the Shocker Air Receiver Hitch is not compatible with weight distribution bars. For that, we recommend our Equalizer Hitch.

Q Will a 2" hitch be okay to use in a 3" receiver with an adapter?
A We do recommend buying the correct size for the best fitment. However, we do have customers with multiple vehicles that use a sleeve to use the hitch, and works just fine.
    6. I tow a 32' travel trailer that weighs approximately 6500 lbs empty and has a tongue weight of 660 lbs. My tow vehicle is a Ram 2500. For your setup, we would recommend our 12K Air Bumper Hitch as this is rated for 12,000 lbs GTW and 1,200 lbs TW. This hitch will help absorb that bouncing and tugging feeling that you feel down the road, check out our Shocker Air Bumper Hitch 101 video for more details. Also, with this specific model, you cannot use weight distribution as it is not designed for that. If you are having sagging issues with your trailer, check out our Air Equalizer for Weight Distribution which is made for that type of towing issue.

Q Do you have a hitch rated for 20,000 pounds and like a 2500 pound tongue weight?
A We currently don't have a receiver hitch that is rated at 20,000 pounds with a 2,500 pound tongue weight. Our current HD is rated to 20,000 pounds with a 2,000 pound tongue weight. But we do have the option for a tongue mount style hitch that mounts to your trailer, that's rated at 25,000 pounds with a tongue weight of 3,500 pounds. Please see the link below. https://shockerhitch.com/product/hd-air-trailer-tongue-mount/

Q After loaded do I need refill or deflate the air to adjust the airbag?
      A

Adding air should be the last step in setting your Shocker Hitch up, after loading your trailer. You will want to make sure to remove any excess air when the hitch isn't in use to prevent wear and tear on the hitch itself.

We used our Shocker Hitch on a trip to Yuma, AZ on the I8. We did notice a lot less bouncing up and down when we went over the expansion joints on the bridges. Much smoother ride then the rigid hitch we used to more the TT to AZ a week before.

Used the hitch for the first time what a difference. I would buy another one in heart beat.

I’m building a retirement property over 400 miles from where I live. I use a 10K 18′ tilt trailer to haul materials and personal property there. I bought this hitch because of the roughness of the hard connection between my truck and trailer. I just completed a round trip last week and the difference is amazing – so much better. I am also very pleased with the quality and design of the product!

      – Mike Strauser
    6. Rated 5 out of 5

Great quality, pins and hardware aren’t junk. Was a little skeptical but the warranty was there so went for it. Got here quick, got it out assembled it, watched the video about airing it up. Once attached took my trailer for a ride. Huge difference. no clattering or noise. The front just floats over bumps and such with no racket. Loaded a tractor on the trailer, aired the hitch up, w over 8000 lbs. w backhoe, bucket and weight of air tow trailer. Pulled nice weight was off but no issue with the hitch. Its one of those deals, buy once and cry once…. It will surely serve well and prob outlive me. Zero remorse. Worth it? Absolutely.

This hitch worlks really well at eliminating a lot of the tug and pull feel and bronc riding down the way. Bigger bumps are better than with traditional hitches but you notice a difference. Low speeds I felt like it was still a little better than traditional hitches , but I noticed bounce on certain low spots. Setup is f250 with 23 ft airstream. Definitely recommend this hitch. I chose this hitch because I didn’t want to mess with all the contraptions associated with weight distribution hitches, but wanted something to isolate the trailer bounce from my rig and this is it.

I never right reviews but this one deserves a big praise. I bought this hitch and immediately drove 2000 miles with an empty trailer. It makes all the difference in the world .. while we encounterd the whole rough roads watching the tralier bounce in the mirror, we could feel hardly anything. Best purchase ever made .

    9. Rated 5 out of 5

Very heavy unit, I used ut to pick up a rig about 20 miles away from our shop, I noticed right away no banging on bridge transitions. Feels smoother, I’ll be bringing this rig 1400 miles in one more day and will see how it performs. I suggest getting the pump or a pump on hand as the air will need to he adjusted empty verse loaded. So far I love it! My chains rub the cage of the shocker but doesn’t interfere with performance. I feel.its better than a hard commection for sure. I’ll know better after my long haul

This hitch is a game changer. Use on a HEAVY (wide/tall) 24′ Toy Hauler with living quarters and a SRW F350. The tongue weigh on this trailer was an issue. This hitch solved that problem. I have never had a trailer pull/track behind a truck as well as it does with this hitch. I was skeptical – especially for the price. I should have bought one 20 years ago. This hitch ia the real-deal and a game-changer for heavy pull trailers.

Cons: It’s heavy and a little cumbersome to install/remove.
Pros: It’s heavy duty and well built . Extremely effective at mitigating road shock being transmitted from trailer to pulling vehicle.

Works Great! I was looking for a way to pull my Aluma 8220H trailer without it beating me up when it’s empty. This hitch with 20 lbs of air has made this trailer tolerable to pull empty.

If I could give this hitch 50 stars I would. Here is my story. I am a mobile technician. I have a Ram 2500 diesel and pull a 8.5′ x 30′ trailer every day, 6 days a week. Over the scales I am 23,000 pounds. This trailer never comes unhooked from my truck – EVER. I drive about 150-300 miles a day. On a Tuesday Morning as I was headed to work down the interstate I heard a “tink, tink tink” sound. I thought nothing of it. Figured I picked up something on the road and spat it out. Went all day and went home with no issues. Wednesday to work and back as normal. Thursday and Friday same thing. That Saturday I was heading to Ohio for family so backed up the trailer in its very occasional home and unhooked. I went to remove the hitch from my truck and that’s when I saw it. My hitch pin was GONE! For 4 days I pulled that trailer with no hitch pin and all that kept that massive trailer on my truck was the pressure from the airbag. For FOUR DAYS, almost 750 miles. Yes I had my chains on, but let’s be honest, 8.5 x 30′ trailer that weighs 15,000 pounds comes loose, It is going to take my truck wherever it wants to and there would be nothing I could do about it but hang on for the ride. Even with the break-away brake it would have gone quite a distance. I would just like to say in all seriousness that this hitch saved mine and who knows how many other lives. I will never buy any other hitch than a SHOCKER HITCH. Yes I upgraded to a beefier locking hitch pin, and check it daily. Thank you SHOCKER HITCH for designing the best hitch the U.S. has ever seen. This thing goes above and beyond and is un-doubtfully the BEST. THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

This hitch is really great! I tow a 5,000# boat and 9,000# RV trailer and it 100% makes the pull so much smoother. Road expansion joints, potholes so much smoother. On the other end braking feels straight and no banging. Very happy with this purchase and thoroughly recommend!

I work out of a cargo trailer, and pull one most every day of the week. Shocker hitch dampens the jerking (chucking) back and forth a lot. It is easier on the truck, and trailer having the air bag in between the two. The shocker hitch I just purchased is my second one. The first one was still good. I planned on moving it to the 2022 truck. Problem is; It was seized in the receiver of the 2016 truck. So I just bought a new one. It works very well. Buy one, you will be happy.

Perfect hitch for multiple trailers with my fiberglass boat to the large 18 ft loaded enclosed trailer! You can actually notice the difference running these hitches vs straight switches. Awesome product, excellent customer service helped me pick the right hitch for me and very fast delivery! Very happy customer here!

Well.made product. Haven’t tri3d with a heavy load yet. Have towed a 26 ft bay boat. Was hoping it would take more of the vounce out over these bumpy roads. And it may o55 to new orleans is a wavey road . And the truck bounces and the boat bounces. I’m sure it absorbing some of it but was hoping for more but may be due to the weight and motor being on the back of the trailer causing the whip.

Lobe the product and design. Again very well made.

I purchased the shocker hitch with the drop and man I cannot sign their praises enough. I towed a 8,000lb travel trailer shortly and it was absolutely a night and day difference vs a regular hitch. It was easy to adjust the psi and my 3/4 ton has never rode better hauling a trailer. I really am floored that more people who haul regularly have never seen or used one.

Hello, I purchased my Shocker Air Hich and anti sway bars about 2 weeks ago for a 1500 mile trip I would be making from Florida to Wisconsin. I was planning to bringing my 12 year old son on the trip and was looking to plan for a safe and successful trip. But I had a big concern about the sway and tongue weight on my lifted F150. I would be hauling an 18′ enclosed trailer carrying a car and tools. I spoke to a rep at SAH and she assured me my concern would be addressed with the Shocker Air Hitch and anti sway bars. So with only a few days before I was scheduled to leave I ordered a them up and she had it shipped over right away. Immediately after Installation I attached the trailer for a test drive I felt much more at ease. I made the trip in 2 days, and definitely put the SAH system through a more than “thorough test.” With Kentucky being the biggest I must say they have the biggest potholes I have ever encountered. But not once did I ever feel out of control. If you want to save the life of your truck and hitch get yourself a Shocker Air Hitch.
Thank you SAH for a great product.

So for good as advertised. Only pulled my bass boat once and noticed the difference. Couldn’t feel the boat behind me. The only problem I noticed on my Toyota Tundra is with a load in the bed it caused a sagging in the rear of the truck. Considering air bags.

I have had the shocker hitch hd for 6 or 7 years I drive entertainment busses hauling musicians around the country and canada I’ve pull trailers almost everyday of the year through some of the harshest environments at speeds of 65 to 75 for 8 to 10 hrs a day and I will not pull a trailer without my shocker hitch for my prevost bus! Great product the owners son built me one just for my prevost at their facility one morning my hitch was rated at 1600lb tongue weight and 16000lbs trailer weight. I use this in commercial applications you can not beat this hitch.

I have been using my shocker hitch since 2005 to tow our track cars, and multi trailers from a 16′ Featherlite to a 24′ Wellscargo.
I’ve been very happy with the product.

The shocker hitch is amazing. Use it for long haul deliveries on 3/4 ton WT with 14,000# flatbed deck-over material handler. Material stays much more secure during transport and ride is much much smoother. I could only think this saves the powertrain on the truck minimizing the jolting of an empty trailer, didn’t see any data in regards to this but could only help for sure. My only complaint is the safety chain bracket on the receiver of truck front leg is long, the hitch rides on the edge of this even with the spacer inserted; it’s not quite right but was desperate for results so I use it as is. I also purchased the trailer shocker too, the combination of the 2 makes a world of difference! I reside in Illinois and make many trips through Iowa and Indiana, 3 of the worst states for road conditions, I had to do something and this works Awesome!

I just did my first trip with my Shocker hitch. I was pulling a 14’ 3000 lb steel dump trailer. Of my large trailer s .. (27’ covered 2600 lb and 2800 lb 28’ flatbed, the dump is the worst in terms of jerking my vehicle around. The ride was generally smooth. The bouncing over bad roads was very manageable compared to without it. My back wasn’t sore after a 2 hr ride either which told me ALL I needed to know! IMPRESSIVE Thank you Shocker!!

Pros: For what the hitch is designed for, it does a very good job at smoothing the ride.
It takes the harsh knocks from the trailer out. ( That is why I purchased it and it does that well.)
      It is very well constructed.

Cons: It is cumbersome to install into the hitch with one person. I have to push down on the air bladder while sliding in the receiver. (I’m sure it will get easier with use.)
It would be great if the hitch came with lockable pins, as it is too expensive to leave exposed to admirers without being secured. I have a lock in the receiver, but the ball also needs to be locked or the hitch needs to be removed when not using.
A portable air compressor is needed, as every load needs a little different inflation.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this product.

Amazing product, works better than expected. I bought the one for a 2.5″ receiver and paired it with a receiver anti-rattle clamp so it can’t bounce around in the receiver which makes for a very quiet, smooth ride. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because I would really like to see this work with at least one brand of towing mud flaps or make your own. I mainly pull large boats or really nice enclosed trailers that I don’t want chipped up. I ended up buying Rockstar full width mud flaps and made my own mounting brackets so it would clear the hitch. All in all, best hitch on the market.

I purchased the Shocker Air Receiver Hitch (2.5″ receiver / 16,000 lb. / 4 to 7.5″ drop with 2 5/16″ ball / Sway control) to use with my new race car trailer. We picked up the trailer in Wynnewood, OK and towed it back to Chattanooga, TN (868 miles one way). The highway (I-40) between OK and TN are as you can imagine in horrendous shape for long stretches. I’ve towed trailers all over and can tell you without hesitation I SHOULD HAVE PURCHASED THIS HITCH YEARS AGO. The difference it makes in ride comfort and reduced wear and tear on by truck cannot be overstated. I’ve tried other “high-end” hitches before and none come close. I you don’t have one of these you’re missing out and causing undue wear and tear on your drive train.

      Highly recommended.

I was debating on whether to go with the Shocker Hitch or the Gen-Y Torision Flex hitch. I’m so glad I chose the Shocker because you’re able to adjust the air pressure according to the tongue weight to gain the maximum results. In my case, the tongue weight varies all the time; some days it’ll be 700 pounds, on other days it’ll be closer to 1,600 pounds (I have a Weigh Safe hitch that I utilize to dial in the tongue weight). Most people would assume the Shocker will only work well with a decent amount of tongue weight on it; I can attest to the fact that it works really well even when the trailer is empty.
I pull an open deck car hauler quite frequently and it has a tendency to really give everything a good shake when it’s empty. While driving over bumps and bad roads, I could clearly see the trailer going up and down (in the Duramax tow mirrors) on it’s own because of the Shocker; I didn’t feel the bucking and jarring of the trailer. I live out in California and we’ve got some serious road “transitions” to counteract the negative effects of earthquakes. Before I had this hitch, the truck would go over that “transition”, then afterwards there would be this jarring effect once the trailer would cross over. Now, the trailer just glides over as if ain’t back there.
I recently did a roundtrip from California to Texas and back, and all I can say is the ride was smooth both loaded and empty (I adjusted the air pressure as needed); trailer was nonexistent. I really should invest in some suspension upgrades for the truck though because the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are no joke when it comes to having stiff suspensions which you can get tired/annoyed of fairly quick.
On a side note, I rode in a 1/2 ton after the longest time and I was so jealous of the ride. Mind you, this 1/2 ton was stock and rode super smooth. I would assume the ride of a 1/2 ton towing with a Shocker Hitch would be serene.
In short, it feels as though the trailer isn’t there. Since the Shocker “absorbs” the trailer, I just feel the truck; if I were to do some suspension upgrades on the truck (for example, better shocks), that 3/4 ton ride would feel even better.
All in all, I would highly recommend investing in the Shocker Air Receiver Hitch. If you’ve got a heavy duty truck, I’d go with the 16K rated version because you never know when you might need that extra capacity.
If you’re concerned about the 16K version being overkill and not having the same effect on a lighter trailer, rest assured because both the 12K and 16K hitches provide the same amount of “cushion”; the 16K version is able to handle/support more weight. This was confirmed by the representatives over at Shocker Hitch who are second to none when it comes to customer service.
For me, the extra cost to purchase the 16K version was completely worth it simply because I have enough leeway between various weights.

I bought this hitch because I hauled some hay in Colorado and the roads were so bad I thought I was going to bust my receiver and the tongue on my trailer. As soon as I got the hitch I loaded up my trailer with my tractor and drove down the roughest road I could find next to my house and the results were amazing. I had driven down this road before with the same load about 5 mph and the trailer was throwing the pickup all over, but that is not the case anymore. I drove down the road at 35 mph and I couldn’t tell the trailer was behind me. There is complete separation of shock from the pickup and trailer and it makes the ride almost unbelievably comfortable. I highly recommend the shocker hitch to anyone that pulls a trailer.

Recently purchased one of these for towing a two horse bumper pull with my Silverado 1500. I have PTSD from a severe car accident and previously had a lot of anxiety towing, exacerbated by the bumps and clunks that come with pulling a trailer. The hitch made my ride so much smoother and more comfortable, I was amazed by the difference. It eased a lot of the stress that I had about hitching up. I’m now EXCITED about hauling places!! Thank you so much for the FANTASTIC product!

What a welcomed relief for towing my equipment trailer empty especially. Having a tilt trailer to move my equipment from job to job, the axles need to be positioned forward of the tilt point on the deck and inevitably causes trailer slap when empty. This hitch takes all of that unnecessary bucking out of the ride with a simple air adjustment. Great product that will save your towing vehicle too!! Get one today, it’s well worth it.

The ShockerHitch was recommended by a friend. The camper dealer I bought my RV from had never heard of it, but when they saw it and they were very impressed. My first trip included travelling over a winding mountain pass. The hitch made the trip very smooth and easy. Instead of jarring over bumps it was a smooth nudging sensation. Glad I bought it. Heading out for a long trip soon, will report back if any updates on performance.

Our towing vehicle is a 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 (Diesel) and our camper is a 25′ travel trailer with a dry weight of about 4200lbs. I did notice a significant improvement but it did not completely eliminate the jerkiness of the ride even with multiple adjustments. I wish there was a ‘scale’ or a way to way to determine the amount of compression. Also, it seems like the metal retaining the bumper material is very close and could be limiting the amount of absorption. Some design modifications would really help make this a perfect towing hitch.

I’ve only had my Shocker Air Receiver Hitch (2″/12,000lb) for about 2 weeks now, but it is amazing! This is the nicest hitch I’ve owned in my 42 years! I towed a 9,000 lb cargo trailer 1,089 miles with this on my 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali, and the ride was smooth and quiet the whole way. Years ago when I towed a trailer cross country with a standard drop hitch, the ride was rough and sketchy the whole way. Thank you, Shocker Hitch, for helping to make my trip a comfortable and smooth one.

We recently purchased our second Shocker a hitch. We first purchased in 2014, this hitch has been nothing short of exceptional. Our recent and second purchase was due to an upgrading a trailer size and heavy capacity. I’ve purchased two hitches from Shockerhitch, the Shocker Air Receiver hitch with a 2-1/2″ receiver and it was the BEST thing I ever did for pulling a trailer [pull behind travel trailer]. You notice the difference right away and immediately realize that it was money very well spent. For another truck, an occasional puller [so I pull the hitch out when not using], I purchased a Shocker XR drop ball mount hitch. Both are solidly built, both have excellent craftsmanship.
