Shocker Quick Air 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Air Ride Hitch Setup Instructions

View our installation instructions for installing the 5th wheel to goose pin box, installing the Gooseneck air hitch & coupler along with setting your air pressure. When used & set up properly the Gooseneck surge air hitch will make noticeable improvements in your gooseneck trailer towing quality. Giving both truck and 5th wheel camper trailer a smoother ride with less trailer fatigue and breakage. Most products on our website have a setup guide and installation video. Note: Safety chains are required for gooseneck trailer towing. Make sure chains are Grade 70 transport NACM V-19 rated.  For gooseneck towing, the safety chain should be properly attached to the gooseneck pin box and the anchors in the truck bed should typically be positioned slightly behind and to both sides of the gooseneck ball (towards the trailer). Best location is slightly rearward of the ball centerline on the left and right of the ball between 6 to 12″ apart from the ball laterally. This allows for good chain angle, proper articulation, reduces interference with the gooseneck coupler and less chain binding when turning. They should Not be directly inline with the gooseneck ball and should never be attached forward of the gooseneck ball. It is not safe and also dangerous to attach the chains in the bed between the gooseneck ball and the cab of the pickup truck.  For OEM puck systems, use the anchors between the ball and the tailgate.

INSTALLATION

Tools Required: 15/16″ wrench. Impact wrench with 15/16″ socket (or equivalent).

1. 1. Gooseneck Pin Box Installation for SH-RVGC-4405, SH-RVGC-4410 or SH-RVGC-4415: On a level surface, take a measurement of your vehicle’s bed floor to the ground and make note. This will be applied to the Shocker Quick Air Gooseneck Surge system. You will want to take the measurement noted and match it to the bottom of the Gooseneck Surge coupler for optimal operating height. Unbolt your existing 5th wheel pin box with a 15/16″ wrench and impact with a 15/16″ socket from your camper trailer and any brake cables. With assistance, remove your 5th wheel pin box and set it aside and/or put it away in storage. With assistance, slide the Quick Air gooseneck pin box in between the camper trailer’s pin box brackets. Once lined up in the correct adjustment holes of the brackets, use the previous pin box’s hardware to install the Quick Air pin box. Before sliding the Quick Air gooseneck pin box in place, it is recommended to use spray grease/lubricant on the pin box brackets to assist installation. NOTES: Some applications may require spacers for the Quick Air pin box to fit properly. Torque to 120 FT pounds. Please note that some pin box frames may require a different torque, refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations. IMPORTANT: DO NOT overtighten the pin box bolts as this can lead to premature wear and possible failure in the gooseneck pin box. It is highly recommended to use additional washers on the backside of the pin box bolts.

1. 1. Gooseneck Surge® Hitch and Coupler Installation: With assistance, take the Shocker gooseneck surge hitch with coupler and insert it into the outer tube of the Quick Air® gooseneck pin box to desired height, install safety through pin with clip, make sure hitch is straight with the trailer, and torque set bolt to 125 ft. lbs. Please note the air spring bag faces toward the rear of the trailer. Before hooking up to your towing vehicle, be sure to lubricate the gooseneck coupler and gooseneck ball in your bed. For proper usage of the gooseneck coupler, refer to the “How to use gooseneck coupler” section.

1. 1. Safety Chain Installation: ALWAYS USE SAFETY CHAINS WITH GOOSENECKS AS IT IS REQUIRED BY LAW: New Style Gooseneck Pin Boxes (2024-newer): Take the “open end” of chain and feed it through the cross cut out to desired length. Insert provided bolt and nut and tighten it on the “top” or “shorter” end of the cross cut out on the pin box. Old Style Gooseneck Pin Boxes (2023-older): Take provided chain brackets and install them using the existing pin box hardware. Take the “open end” of chain and feed it through the cross cut out to desired length. Insert provided bolt and nut and tighten it on the “top” or “shorter” end of the cross cut out on the pin box. Make sure chains are Grade 70 transport NACM V-19 rated. 1. 1. How to Use Shift Lock Gooseneck Coupler: Move handle to unlocked position and lower trailer onto gooseneck ball. Lock coupler by moving the Shift Lock® handle forward. The u-bolt should stick out 1″ from the coupler rear when locked. If you do NOT see this, repeat until u-bolt is visible from rear of coupler. Insert safety pin through the shift lock handle holder to lock handle into locked position. You can also attach the extra clip at the back of the u-bolt. To release gooseneck coupler from ball, remove safety pin on Shift Lock® handle and slide handle “backward,” re-install safety pin, and jack the trailer up off ball.

1. 1. How to Use Demco Gooseneck Coupler: EZ Latch Demco Coupler: Lower trailer onto gooseneck ball, as you lower, the EZ Latch handle will begin to lift. The coupler will fully lock when the EZ Latch handle “snaps” back into its original position. To release coupler from ball, lift handle “upward” where it will rest and crank trailer up off ball and jack the trailer up off ball.. Flip handle back down when ready for next hook-up.

Gooseneck Air Hitch Air Pressure Settings

• Initially set air pressure to around 15 PSI. Test drive and adjust air pressure in 5 PSI increments until optimum results are found. Decreasing or increasing air pressure may be needed for best ride and load control. When towing in high winds, it may be necessary to increase the air ride system air pressure. IMPORTANT: NEVER exceed 100 PSI in the air spring bag. This may lead to a stiffer ride and damage the air spring bag itself. Typical air pressure range is 15-25 PSI

Maintenance:

• • Regularly grease the inside of the coupler or the gooseneck trailer ball.

• • Grease main pivot grease zerk regularly for maximum performance & pivot bolt & pivot bolt bushings lift located on the front of the hitch above the coupler. You can’t over grease it.

• • If the top bump stop cushions become worn or look mashed, replace them. Replacement part # SH-970.

• • For the Shift lock gooseneck coupler, grease or oil the u-bolt regularly.

• • To adjust trailer ride height simply loosen the 1⁄2″ x 1″ set bolt with jam in the front of the gooseneck pin box down tube. Remove the 3/4″ x 5″ safety through pin with clip. Move Shocker Gooseneck Surge hitch to desired position, reinstall safety through pin with clip and tighten set bolt and jam nut.

Hitch Capacity for Shocker Quick Air 5th to Gooseneck Air Kit: 24,000 lbs Gross Trailer Weight and 6,000 lbs Tongue Weight. Connects to 2-5/16″ Gooseneck Ball. Safety Notice: The Shocker Hitch is a heavy-duty unit, however, towing capacity is limited by lowest rated component. Use only a 2 5/16″ diameter gooseneck hitch ball that is properly rated. Do not exceed GVWR or ball or tow vehicle being used. This gooseneck stem and coupler has a shorter stem than a normal gooseneck and is designed to be used with the Shocker Replacement Gooseneck Pin Box for 5th Wheel Campers only. This gooseneck air hitch cannot be used on a normal gooseneck trailer as the inner tube steel is too short for that application.

INSTALLATION
