    XR Series Hitch: Drop, Rise & Tow Ratings

    Never exceed the lowest applicable gross trailer weight or tongue-weight rating of any component in your towing setup. Evaluate each limit separately. Attachment ratings do not increase the hitch base’s ratings. In the table, each pair means maximum trailer weight / maximum tongue weight in pounds. Attachment ratings do not increase the hitch base rating.

    The table covers the XR 8-hole frame. The existing XR frame specification provides 2 inches of additional drop and rise for the 10-hole frame; confirm the selected frame and attachment before towing.

    Your usable adjustment range depends on the selected attachment. Match its name below.

    Sway-control-tab mounts: Use the range and ball rating for the corresponding combo, drop or raised ball mount. Confirm compatibility with your selected hitch.

    No Ball Mount: A compatible, properly rated attachment is required for towing; the base alone does not provide a towing connection.

    Choose the drop or rise your trailer needs

    Measure on level ground with the trailer level. “Level” means zero drop or rise. How to choose the right drop hitch (opens in a new tab).

    Follow the lowest rating: These are attachment ratings, not a guarantee of your complete hitch capacity. Never exceed the lowest applicable trailer-weight or tongue-weight limit of the vehicle, receiver, hitch base, attachment, ball or trailer. A higher-rated attachment does not increase a lower-rated hitch base’s capacity. Use the marked tongue-weight rating; it is not calculated from towing capacity.

    Drawbar, cushioned drawbar and SH-360 clevis: 0 lb vertical tongue load; these mounts are not for use with a hitch ball.

    Legacy attachment: The bolt-on pintle hook SH-331-332 is discontinued. Its row is retained for existing owners; confirm the label and instructions for your exact attachment.

    Download the Shocker XR Series Hitch Instructions Insert the shank of the hitch into the receiver of your tow vehicle. Make sure you are using the correct size shank to work with your receiver. Secure the hitch with a hitch pin. Adjust the ball mount attachment so your tow vehicle and trailer are level. You can flipped the XR frame around for more drop or more rise.

      A Great question - here's how the XR ball mounts are actually rated: **XR ball mount ratings (combo, drop or raised ball):** • **2" ball:** 10,000 lbs GTW / 1,000 lbs TW • **2-5/16" ball:** 20,000 lbs GTW / 2,000 lbs TW So no - they are **not** both rated at 12,000 lbs. Our XR ball mounts use either a **2"** or a **2-5/16"** ball; there isn't a 2-5/8" ball option. If you meant the **2-5/16"**, that one is rated at 20,000 lbs GTW. The **12,000 lb** number you're seeing is the **XR hitch base (frame) rating** for the 2" receiver model - the base is 12,000 lbs with a 2" receiver, 16,000 lbs with a 2-1/2" receiver, and 20,000 lbs with a 3" receiver. Keep in mind that towing capacity is limited by the **lowest-rated component**, so the ball, mount, hitch base, receiver and vehicle all factor in - the ball rating doesn't raise the base or vehicle rating.

      We needed a heavy duty pintle hitch to pull a jetvac behind our dually as well as bumper hitch trailers hauling excavators and trenchers . I spent some time looking for a hitch that was capable of the weight requirements and a hitch that could switch between pintle and ball without much work. This hitch does both well.
      This hitch is not cheap but you get your money’s worth with it.

      Bought the XR frame for 2” hitch with 10 holes & drop mount using the 2-5/16” ball with sway tabs. Extremely solid piece of equipment for sure, haven’t installed the sway control arm yet but pulled 3 round bales very smoothly and very balanced. I usually get some sway with my horse trailer so I’m very hopeful this will help. I usually pull round bales every month and this time it felt very different – in a good way – pulling almost 7,000 lbs with trailer weight and bales.
