What Size Receiver Hitch Does My Truck or SUV Have?

A normal air receiver may be suitable when the vehicle handles the loaded trailer within its ratings, settles no more than roughly 2-3 inches, and can tow without weight distribution. Air cushioning helps soften the towing connection.

For 2-inch receivers, the linked 8-hole kit provides 5-inch rise to 2-inch drop and uses the shorter frame. If more drop is needed, review the 4-inch-drop kit after checking ground clearance. Confirm WD need, vehicle/suspension fit, loaded weights and the lowest point of the full hitch/head/bar assembly. Aim for 10.5-11 inches or more below the complete assembly, with 11 inches advised for heavier loads. Rear coil-over SUVs/CUVs remain excluded.

See our Ground Clearance Guide.

If the rear squats more than about 2-3 inches, you need a weight distribution hitch or you need to add or adjust the rear air suspension or helper-spring support on the tow vehicle. If using a WD Hitch, follow vehicle and receiver WD requirements. This also does not increase vehicle ratings.

See our guide on solutions for truck squatting.

Small squat while WD is engaged does not show that WD can be removed. Keep required weight distribution if needed.

For a suitable HD air setup with an actual 2-1/2-inch receiver, a taller-than-stock or lifted truck may need HD Air Super Drop. Confirm measured drop and clearance; standard HD can still be suitable when its adjustment is enough.

Cushion hitches soften the connection without air adjustment. XR is solid. Linked SKUs are the most-sold configurations on the linked product page for the listed receiver. Match the exact ball, weight limits and drop/rise to your trailer.

Check loaded trailer and tongue weight against all applicable vehicle, receiver, hitch, ball and mount limits. The lowest rating controls. Confirm the exact ball size, adjustment range, orientation and clearance. Frame color and ball finish are separate choices.
