Air Ride Hitch Technology: Shocker Air is designed with a built-in air bag for a smoother towing experience. Just add air depending on the weight of your trailer and its’ contents.

Simple Pivot Design: Uses a rocker arm pivot design which produces a front and back motion, much different than other cushion hitches on the market. Our design eliminates the need for parallel linkages, shock absorbers, torsion arms and other over engineered gadgets.

Adjustable for Tow Weight: The air bag sits behind your gooseneck hitch and out of the way. You will find the advantage of the Air Shocker is your ability to adjust air pressure for best ride and load control. View our Shocker PSI Air Pressure tuning guide.

Shift Lock™ Coupler: 30,000 lbs rated, patented gooseneck coupler. The only gooseneck coupler that captures ball on both sides. At a glance, you can see if the coupler is locked on the ball. Easy to use handle to hook up and disconnect the coupler from the ball.

Saves Fuel: By using a gooseneck Surge Hitch, you may save as much as one mile per gallon. When we developed the Surge Hitch our intention was to give a smoother ride, period. We perfected that and never considered the other benefits. Customers using the Surge hitch started calling with reports of better fuel mileage. Claims of up to a mile per gallon are pretty normal.

Improves Safety: By giving you improved control of your tow vehicle and trailer. The Gooseneck surge air hitch system allows for better control of your pickup and the trailer it is towing.

Shock Dampening Action: Shocker air hitch effectively absorbs the jerking, tugging and damaging forces experienced with a typical hard connection when towing trailers. There is no reason to beat yourself or your equipment up with a hard connection.

Saves Money: By reducing trailer breakage on both the trailer and the trailer contents! The Shocker hitch absorbs the damaging forces experienced with a typical hard connection. This greatly reduces the chances of breaking welds and doing other long term damage to your equipment as well as the valuable cargo you have inside the truck and trailer.

Provides Comfort: With a smoother ride! Travel a lot on concrete highways? No more jarring every time you cross a section divider. Your Shocker air hitch absorbs the thumps, bumps and jerks you feel when towing your gooseneck trailer from Bison.

How to Air Up Gooseneck Surge Air Coupler?

Gooseneck Surge Air Pressure:

  • This is a LOW-PRESSURE hitch, that works by tow resistance.
  • Set air pressure at approx. 15 psi, then test drive.
  • Increase pressure in 5 psi increments until optimum results are found.
  • Typical air pressure range is 5 – 15 psi.
Note: When towing heavy trailers or trailers with high wind resistance it may be necessary to increase air pressure in the Shocker. Maximum Pressure: Do not exceed 100 psi in the air bag, as it may damage the air bag.

Installation

  1. Take a vertical measurement from the bottom of the ball coupler tube to the bottom of the trailer frame sleeve. This dimension will be used to set the Shocker Gooseneck Surge Trailer Hitch
  2. Remove pins or loosen locking bolts on the trailer frame sleeve, and remove the existing coupler tube.
  3. Slide Gooseneck Surge Shocker Hitch insert tube inside the trailer frame sleeve with the air bag toward the rear of trailer.
  4. Hold or support Shocker at vertical measurement noted in Step #1. This should duplicate the previous ride height of the trailer. Shockerhitch must be properly aligned, (parallel with trailer), to maximize its benefits. Note: If your trailer coupler tube is equipped with a pin or pins, the correct pin location must be marked in the Shockerhitch insert tube and have a qualified machine shop drill / machine the pin holes.
  5. Torque locking bolts to your trailer manufacturers’ recommended specifications. A spacer kit is available for some applications.
  6. Lubricate: Oil the coupler shaft, grease coupling ball socket, and grease the hitch ball to REDUCE WEAR AND IMPROVE SHOCKER ACTION. Main pivot grease zerk should be greased periodically for maximum bushing life. ( Simply, you cannot over-grease it! )
  7. Hook up the trailer by simply lowering the coupler onto the ball. (Handle will snap open & shut automatically). To release trailer: Pull handle up and hold while raising trailer.

FAQ

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions on the Gooseneck Surge

How do I know the Gooseneck surge with fit my gooseneck trailer? There are two things you need to know. What kind of stem your gooseneck trailer has and what kind of ball your pickup has. You can also find the hitch you need by using our Gooseneck Trailer MFG guide.

What is the Gooseneck surge tow rating?  30,000 lbs towing capacity with Shift Lock coupler for 2-5/16″ ball  / 7,000 lbs tongue weight & 40,000 lbs towing capacity with 40K goose air with Shift Lock coupler for 3″ ball. With a 30k Shift Lock coupler its 30,000 lbs towing capacity & 7,000 lbs tongue weight.

How long will the airbag last? Our air spring bags are an industrial bag and will last for years and years. They are similar to truck airbags but have been beefed up internally for our towing applications.

Is there a way to lock the Gooseneck coupler? Yes, we do carry a gooseneck coupler lock specially made for our surge hitch as well as a stem set bolt lock. You can check those out here: https://shockerhitch.com/product/sl-gooseneck-coupler-set-bolt-locks/

Can you really install the Gooseneck Surge in a couple of minutes? Yes check out the install video.

How much air do I put in the gooseneck surge air hitch?  See air pressure video.

What do your mean when you say straight or angled / slotted pin holes?  We are wondering if your gooseneck stem has holes that are straight across OR if it is slightly angled 10-30 degrees, where the stem hitch pin is off set or at an angle. Below is a picture of an angled stem, which we would use a stem with slotted holes to fit this angled pin. See our gooseneck stem selection guide.

Will it work with my flat bed pickup with recessed in a flatbed pocket? Yes, see install tab and fitment guide for recessed ball.

If I Order a gooseneck surge air hitch & coupler, what all comes in the box? Includes a complete replacement gooseneck stem, surge air hitch system & coupler along with clear-cut installation instructions.

How long will it hold air? This is a sealed air system that will hold air for weeks or months. If you haul the same trailer with the same load weight, it should be good for quite some time.

How strong is the center pivot bolt?  The main pivot bolt with grease zerk, or center pivot bolt, used on the gooseneck hitch, is a custom made 1 inch diameter 1045 medium carbon steel bolt. Strategically heat treated to prevent wear and includes a machined grease passage for easy lubrication and maintenance. It should be noted that the yield strength of the 1.25″ pivot bolt exceeds the rating of the gooseneck hitch.

How often do I grease it? The grease does not just lube the pivot; it also keeps water and dirt out. You cannot over grease it, once every few months should do it.

How does the air ride work? The air shocker is like a teeter totter. One end is an air bag, a pivot in the middle, and a ball at the other end. This gives a “pillow” effect at the ball end.

How much does an Shocker gooseneck surge weigh? The Gooseneck Surge Air Hitch & Coupler weighs 95 to 100 lbs depending on the model.

Questions and answers of the customers

I recently purchased one from a friend for our bison horse trailer, I didn’t find the fit information until afterwards. The shocker hitch has the straight holes but your guide says my bison is equipped with the angled holes, I installed the hitch and everything fits as should, looking at it the only thing I noticed is the airbag doesn’t point straight as I suspect the angled hole hitch would. The friend that I purchased from had the exact fit and never had any problems, may I have some feedback on your professional thoughts whether I should keep it or replace with the angled hole hitch? Thank you so much.

  1. We pull a large LQ with a 12′ superslide. Even with our dually it bucked and lurched on bad roads and they are all bad out here! I was skeptical about the Shocker but with the 30 day trial and free return shipping, I was willing to try it. We headed out on the rodeo trail from SW Montana to Northern Canada to the Saskatchewan border and back to Dillon. Nearly 2,000 miles was all the proof I needed! The Shocker is staying on my trailer. Now, it’s not a $12 air ride system, but it’s dang good for $990. And it was super easy to install. My hubs and I did it by ourselves… and we’re both long in the tooth. If you’re thinking about it, try it. You won’t regret it.

  2. So far so good!! I have taken just one little test run since installing the Shocker gooseneck hitch on our Bison Premiere LQ horse trailer. Huge improvement in the ride with 20 psi. My trailer weighs about 15k with 4.5-5.5 k on the hitch. Looking forward to our trip to Montana later this summer and fine tuning for the ultimate ride. 😀

  3. First trip with Shockerhitch on old bumpy state highway. The hitch made for a smooth ride instead of being beat to death.
